Receiving the award at the Redskins game also sheds light on the bigger picture of professional sports and sustainability. ACORE member NRG Energy has revolutionized the way professional sports stadiums generate power on game day. At the Redskins’s FedEx field, NRG Energy’s solar canopy provides 2MW, about 23%(100% on non-gamedays) of the power needed on game day. eVgo, a subsidiary of NRG, also has a great partnership with the Redskins, having constructed 10 eVgo charging stations at the stadium for drivers of electric vehicles to plug in while tailgating and enjoying the game. We’re proud to have ACORE members innovating and working to revolutionize the industry and bring renewable energy to scale.
Receiving an award on FedEx field, watching the Redskins warm up from the sidelines before the game, and cheering on the Redskins with ACORE, NRG Energy, and eVgo staff was a tremendous experience. Walking on the field to receive the award in front of so many Redskins fans allowed me to reflect on how far renewable energy and sustainability efforts have come since ACORE was founded more than a decade ago. Renewable energy is now powering sports arenas and bringing fans to the games. While we still have a ways to go in constructing the clean, renewable energy future of tomorrow, this award shows how far the industry has come in the past few decades. Maybe we didn’t score the touchdown yet, but the industry has moved the ball down the field, within the redzone and we’re coming on strong.
