It is a great pleasure to join with you bright and early this morning to talk about an issue that is of great concern to each and every one of us that is a member of the human species -- and who have children and hope that our children have children.
As Michael Eckhart said in introducing me, renewable energy and energy efficiency are issues that I have been involved in very directly and intimately for the last 3 or 4 years. But I have to admit to you that when I became Mayor of Seattle in 2002 this was not on the front burner.

Thank you very much Mike for the entirely overblown introduction. The reason for it is that I know you were expecting Maria Cantwell and he was trying to give you something that sounded like not too much of a consolation prize. Maria is going to be here and for those of those who are disappointed that she is not here right now let me assure you that I am used to such disappointments. The worst of them, of all, truly humbling, was in 1991 or 1992. I was called to give a talk at Mount Holyoke when Robert Redford cancelled at the last minute. Believe me, your disappointment is nothing.

INTRODUCTION AND THANK YOUS
Thank you, Jay, for that kind and generous introduction.
I am continually thankful for your leadership on this critical issue area. You really do carry Apollo’s fire! I look forward to continuing our productive partnership in the next Congress and years to come. I think we will be passing increasingly more progressive energy bills every year for the next couple years so I am proud and thankful that such a wise and influential voice hails from Washington state.
Remarks by Nancy Floyd at the 2008 Democratic National Convention

Ever since I graduated college, I have worked in one way or another on renewable energy – trying to find cleaner, cheaper ways to power everything from our cars to our homes to our entire economy.
I’ve worn a tool belt, put on rattlesnake guards, and gotten my hands dirty while I literally helped build some of the very first wind farms in the country. And now my partners and I at Nth Power work with energy entrepreneurs, helping to bring their ideas to market.
I graduated college 32 years ago when the entire nation was focused on “the energy crisis.”
Three decades have passed, and where are we now?
