Appointed to World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) Committee of Chairpersons
August 8, 2011, Washington, D.C. - " The American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) today announced that Tom Weirich, Vice President Membership and Corporate Relations, has been appointed to the World Council for Renewable Energy's Committee of Chairpersons as the 2012 Chairperson for the United States.
"WCRE is pleased to have Tom Weirich join our Committee of Chairpersons, representing the United States. Not only will the WCRE have the benefit of Mr. Weirich's knowledge of renewable energy in America, but the WCRE will be able to strengthen our long-standing connections with the renewable energy community in the United States," said WCRE General Chairman Peter Droege.
ACORE president Admiral Dennis McGinn added, "Energy is a global need. Development of new sources of sustainable energy is a challenge that all regions must face. ACORE appreciates the key role that WCRE plays in facilitating the international sharing of knowledge and best practices to meet our global energy challenge. I'm pleased for ACORE to be part of the important work of the WCRE."
"The shared missions of ACORE and WCRE make my new role at WCRE very clear," said Weirich. "ACORE has long been a voice for renewable energy. We--our members and partner organizations--are keeping a sharp focus on the mission ahead of us, moving forward with critically important work impacting the strategy and creation of a more secure, sustainable and prosperous America with 21st century renewable energy technologies. I am honored to be able to play an important role with WCRE."
Weirich has been with ACORE for over 7 years. He was appointed by Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, to be Vice Chair of the Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee in 2010. He has established a leadership role within the U.S. renewable energy industry focusing specifically on the development of programs to expand the competitiveness of the U.S. renewable energy industry including programs and policies to expand exports of goods and services of hundreds of U.S. companies. Through ACORE, he maintains international relationships with the Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), Renewable Energy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The founding of both ACORE and the WCRE in 2001 were linked through the late Dr. Hermann Scheer who was the General Chairman of the WCRE and also a founding member of ACORE. "The World Council for Renewable Energy's mission is to bring renewable energy into the mainstream of world economy and lifestyle," said WCRE Managing Director, Irm Scheer-Pontenagel. "Dr. Scheer's influence shaped ACORE's founding mission statement as well. Our two organizations are dedicated to strengthening the movement for a better sustainable planet, and Mr. Weirich's membership in our Committee of Chairpersons is a boost for our organization."
Weirich will continue in his role at ACORE. His WCRE Committee of Chairpersons' appointment begins August 8, 2011.
