Challenge

The world faces serious challenges related to energy supply, energy consumption, and the economic, environmental, and climate-related consequences of these conditions.  In particular, U.S. imports of oil threaten our economic stability and national security.  The problem is worsening as China, India and the rest of the world increase the demand for oil, at the same time that peak oil production appears to be close at hand.  The Earth faces severe challenges of environmental degradation and global warming related to our energy supply and demand.  The time for action is now.

Opportunity

Colleges and universities have a vital and urgent role to play in mobilizing our intellectual resources. They can lead in the development of strategies for our nation, and solutions for every organization and individual across the globe.   Academic institutions who wish to take immediate action can do so by advancing the objectives of the ACORE Higher Education Committee.

By demonstrating how to transition to a cleaner, more secure, more reliable and less expensive energy future, by developing curricula for renewable energy in their schools of engineering, science, law, business, public policy and other fields, and by engaging in renewable energy research, the academic community will make a significant and positive impact.
