Lifelong clean energy advocate would have been a powerful voice for balance and reform in Washington

For Immediate Release: October 1, 2013

Washington, DC – Today, President Barack Obama’s nominee to lead the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced that he has pulled his name from further consideration. Ron Binz, most recently Chairman of Colorado’s Public Utilities Commission from 2007 to 2011, has faced stiff opposition from coal, gas, and fossil fuel supporters as well as a protracted stalemate in the Senate Energy Committee.

“We all find this withdrawal very disappointing. Ron Binz is a tremendous leader and advocate for balanced energy policies. These policies include fossil fuels but also a strong role for various types of renewable energies,” explained Michael Brower, ACORE’s interim President and CEO. “This is a big loss for those of us that believe renewable energies have a real and growing place in the domestic energy supply, both in electricity generation and transportation fuels.”

“Ron would have been an outstanding FERC Chairman, and a worthy successor to current Chairman Jon Wellinghoff. Both in their respective roles have worked tirelessly to ensure America’s energy independence and economic strength through balanced development of our vast renewable energy and fossil resources and modernization of our power market system.”

“Ron has always been very willing to help lead national policy on a balanced energy approach. He has had prominent roles in numerous ACORE events and activities, including past REFF Wall Street conferences and our recent New York roundtable in June. Luckily for those of us that support a strong role for renewable energy in the domestic energy supply, Ron’s voice within the community will not be lost.” concluded Brower. We at ACORE will continue to work with him, tapping into his expertise to shape renewable energy policies and continue to grow the renewable energy economy.”
